The Krugerrand

This is one full ounce of gold plus 8% of copper that is added to give it more stability. (Purity: .9167 / 22 carat)

Dimensions : 32.8 mm X 2.84 m. The weight is 33,9 grams.

The Krugerrands were first minted in 1967. They counted for about 90% of the total global coin market by 1980.

While numerous world mints have introduced various gold bullion coins onto the market in the past couple of decades, the South African Krugerrand remains the world’s number one seller.

These gold coins are legal tender and unlike other types of assets and commodities, they are exempt from VAT.

There are more than 64 million in circulation. Krugerrands are extremely liquid (easily converted into cash).

Silver Krugerrand

Our preferred silver coin is our very own one ounce silver Krugerrand. “Local is lekker.” The demand far outstrips the supply.

SA does not refine and manufacture its own silver coins, they are made and imported from the USA.

Our gold equivalent coin, the Krugerrand is still the most popular coin in the world.

SA was the first country to launch the promoting of these one ounce gold coins, our silver Krugerrands were slow starters, they only commenced on the 50th celebration of the golden coin in 2017.

When the money supply (cash) comes to an end, investors will use their silver one ounce coin to trade (barter with) to purchase a basket of goods (eg. vegetables and fruit). South African’s will want to exchange the local coin as it will naturally be the most trusted above all others.

Armenia Silver Noah’s Ark

The Armenian coin commemorates Noah’s Ark, which came to rest on the Mountains of Ararat after the Great Flood, according to Genesis 8:4 in the Bible.

Armenia is a nation, and former Soviet republic, in the mountainous Caucasus region between Asia and Europe, a neighbour of Turkey.

With only 30,000 sq. km of land and almost 3 million inhabitants, Armenians have been through a complicated history.

The 1 ounce coin is composed of .999 fine silver. Depicted on the obverse of the coin is the Armenian coat of arms, with the year of minting. On the reverse is a rendition of Noah’s Ark and a dove holding an olive branch, with Mount Ararat in the background. Circling this image is an inscription in Armenian reading, “NOAH’S ARK.”

The coin comes in a tube of 20 coins.

Australia Silver Kangaroo

The one ounce silver Australia kangaroo coin, has the red kangaroo, Australia’s beloved and largest native mammal that appears on the reverse (the back) side of the coin. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, appears on the obverse side of the coin (the front).

The coin offers investors 99.99% pure silver. It has a $1 face value. The coin enjoys legal tender status.

This coin includes an authentication feature on the reverse in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. This is only detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.

The Perth Mint has been minting since 1899. This coin commenced its striking in 2015. The mintage every year is unlimited. In 2016 a record of more than 11 million were issued.

Austrian Silver Philharmonic

The silver Vienna Philharmonic has proved to be a massive hit with investors, selling 41 million pieces in the past three years alone. Like its gold counterpart, the silver coin depicts a harmonious assortment of musical instruments, including a string bass, cellos, violins, a bassoon, a harp and a Viennese horn, on its reverse.

The obverse of the coin shows the great organ of the Musikverein concert hall in Vienna, the orchestra’s home. The face value, weight, fineness and year of issue also feature on this side of the coin.

As Vienna Philharmonics in silver are legal tender they also offer a high degree of security to investors. First minted in 2008 by the 800-year old Austrian Mint, Silver Vienna Philharmonics are pure .999 fine silver bullion coins. Each coin contains one troy ounce of pure silver and measures 1.457″ (or 37 mm) in diameter.

The reverse side of the coin features the image of the “Great Organ” found in Vienna’s “Golden Hall,” the concert hall where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs. The country of issue, the silver weight in ounces, and the 1.5 euro legal tender value are also stamped on the reverse side of the coin.

British Silver Britannia

If you have stocked up with silver Krugerrands, it may be a good idea to consider diversifying. As far as I am concerned, our primary aim is to acquire silver, and silver at the best price. After all, an ounce of silver is an ounce of silver. We want silver for its ability to protect our purchasing power. We do not want to pay a premium in order to acquire a unique or scarce coin. We are not collectors, we are investors.

The silver Britannia is an attractive coin and it has four security features, making it the safest coin in the world.

The Royal Mint, based in Wales, has been striking coins for over a 1 000 years. They do not appear to have a sliver shortage as these coins are readily accessible in SA, as they are flown in regularly.

In the UK these coins do not attractive capital gains tax, they are exempt as they are regarded as legal tender (money). As South Africans, we tend to have an affinity with the UK, a popular destination  for travel, it would therefore make sense to purchase silver Britannia’s. They can be used for travel money and easily exchanged in the UK when there is a need for cash – just like travellers cheques of old.

Canadian Silver Maple Leaf

The Maple Leaf is the national symbol of Canada, as displayed on their flag. Queen Elizabeth II is on the coin’s other side of the coin.

The Royal Canadian Mint, in Winnipeg, issued the first-ever silver Maple Leaf in 1988. The Maple Leaf issued was the first coin that is made up of a purity of 99.99% silver. They weigh close to 31.1 grams. The Silver Maple Leaf is legal tender. The face value is 5 Canadian dollars. Each year 17 million are struck.

The silver Canadian Maple Leaf is an attractive coin and it has security features, such as no date is displayed, It can only be viewed with a magnifying glass. In 2014, new security features were introduced: radial lines and a micro-engraved laser mark, making it one of the safest coin in the world.

These coins bought and sold for less than $1,000, are tax exempt in Canada, neither are they subject to Capital Gains Tax if they are sold for a profit. They are exempt as they are regarded as legal tender (money).

American silver Eagle

The US Mint has four active coin-producing mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point, New York. In 1986, they began striking the American Silver Eagle coin, the official silver bullion coin of the United States of America. Since its inception, over 500 million ounces of Silver American Eagle coins have been purchased by investors around the world.

Each coin contains the stated .999 fine silver weight in troy ounces. The coins have $1 US silver dollar legal tender face values.

On the front we find Lady Liberty carrying branches of laurel and oak with the United States flag draped over her shoulders. The year of strike and the word ‘LIBERTY’ and ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ are also engraved on the coin.

The back side or obverse depicts an eagle behind a shield. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other talon. There are also 13 five-pointed stars representing U.S.A.’s original Thirteen Colonies.

The American Silver Eagle Coins generally receive the highest buy and sell prices today.

American Silver Buffalo

Buffalo silver rounds are some of the most popular silver investment items being sold today. Like American gold buffalo coins their design is based on the Indian Head nickel, also known as the Buffalo nickel, which was minted between 1913 and 1938.

Buffalo silver rounds are not produced by the US Mint, but rather by a private mint, with the most popular version being produced by the Wall Street Mint.

Reminder: our primary aim is to acquire silver at the best price. After all, an ounce of silver is an ounce of silver. We want silver for its ability to protect our purchasing power. We do not want to pay a premium in order to acquire a unique or scarce coin. We are not collectors, we are investors.

General silver other options

Why buy silver and which coin should one buy?

We have focused on the five most sought after silver coins for South Africans, namely, The silver Krugerrand, the Britannia, the Maple Leaf, the Kangaroo and the Eagle. They are probably purchased in this order too. One would do well to adopt a similar strategy in acquiring them for your portfolio too.

There are other silver coins too, viz., The Chinese silver Panda, the Austrian silver Philharmonic, the Armenian’s silver Noah’s Ark and the American silver Buffalo, just to name a few.

There are theme coins, such as the Big Five, but one does pay a premium of 45% to acquire them

Then there are proof silver coins. These are for collectors (not investors). One pays a huge premium of 100%+ for them. My simple advice here is, stay away from them.

Bags of old silver coins are also an option, you do need to know what you are doing as the silver content of these coins varies greatly.

Lastly, there are silver bars. These are for the discerning investor that knows what he is doing. They are most definitely cost efficient, but harder to sell, because they are not very tradable.

As there is little or no demand for unknown coins and numismatic coins (for collectors), I would tend to say, avoid them. If the day should come that you wish to sell your silver coins, you do want to know there is a good market for them and that you therefore can liquidate them quickly.

The principles of demand and diversification apply. Use this as your strategy when adding to your silver portfolio
